Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

HERSHEY, Pa. - David Marshal's four-point game led the offensive charge for the Hershey Bears as they defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 6-1, at GIANT Center in their first meeting of this preseason.

Goals in quick succession during the first period allowed the Bears to own a 3-1 lead after the first twenty minutes of hockey. Hershey's Tyler Ruegsegger opened the scoring at 5:55 of the frame when he cut across the crease to redirect a Patrick Wellar point shot inside the near post.

On the very next shift, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was able to knot the score at one just 23 seconds after Hershey's go-ahead goal. Former Bear Mike Carman picked off a clearing pass and knocked the puck over to Adam Payerl, who skated in alone and tucked a shot through the pads of goalie Philipp Grubauer.

The Bears built a two-goal cushion later in the period thanks to a pair of tallies 1:15 apart. Casey Wellman's turnaround shot off a turnover in the slot just trickled across the goal line before Jeff Taffe then blasted one-timer over the glove of Penguins goalie Andy Chiodo.

Hershey made the score, 4-1, at 7:45 of the second when Ruegsegger threw a centering pass from behind the Penguins net that David Marshall redirected to the top corner.

Already with a goal and two assists on the night, Marshall potted his second of the contest at 13:21 of the third period to extend the Bears' lead to four. Derek Whitmore added a power play goal for Hershey with 1:27 remaining to complete the scoring.

Chiodo turned aside 9-of -13 shots while playing 30:32 of the match. Jeff Deslauriers made 21 saves on 23 shots for the Penguins through the rest of regulation. Hershey's Grubauer stopped 19-of-20.
