San Antonio Rampage News Release

SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 28, 2014) - The San Antonio Rampage (17-10-3-0) lost to the Texas Stars (13-10-8-0) for the first time in four meetings this season, falling 6-3 at the Cedar Park Center on Sunday evening.

The offense started early, as the Stars and the Rampage each scored within the opening 2:30 of the game. A Gemel Smith one-timer gave Texas the early lead, but Bobby Butler scored less than two minutes later - and just seven seconds into San Antonio's first power-play opportunity of the night - to even the score at one. The goal was Butler's team-leading 12th of the season, three of which have come with the man advantage.

The Stars took back the lead with a power-play goal late in the frame. Curtis McKenzie punched in a puck left loose in front of the net, giving Texas a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period.

Five goals were scored between the two teams in a wild second period. Garrett Wilson scored on the power play to once again even the score in the contest. A Scott Valentine goal near the midway point of the stanza gave the lead back to Texas, and they would extend that lead to two goals, as Brett Ritchie's blast from the high slot beat Ellis at 9:10.

Jesse Blacker scored his first of the season and first in a Rampage uniform to bring the Silver and Black within one late in the frame, but the Stars would answer shortly after. Ellis came out of the net to make a save on a McKenzie shot, but he didn't cover up the rebound and Smith was there to put the puck into a nearly empty net, giving the Stars a 5-3 lead heading into the second break.

After a flurry of scoring over the first two periods, neither team found the back of the net in the third until Ritchie scored on an empty net with just under three minutes remaining, as San Antonio pulled Ellis for the extra attacker just moments earlier. Ritchie's goal sealed a 6-3 win for the Stars.

KEY STAT

After a 0-for-21 drought on the power play over the last eight games, the Rampage had success on the power play on Sunday, finishing with two goals on four chances with the man advantage. Butler, who notched the first power-play goal of the game, is now tied for the team lead in power-play goals with three.

LINEUP NOTES

Steven Kampfer was out of the lineup, serving a one-game suspension as a consequence of a match penalty that was assessed during Saturday's game against the Oklahoma City Barons. With Shane O'Brien also out to get some rest, Mackenzie Weegar and Jesse Blacker drew into lineup. San Antonio's forward lines remained unchanged.

UP NEXT

The Rampage continue a six-game road trip, taking on the Utica Comets and the Toronto Marlies next week. San Antonio returns home to face the Iowa Wild on Jan. 10. Individual and season tickets can be purchased by calling a Rampage representative at 210-444-5554 or online at sarampage.com .
