Penguins Fight Past Admirals for 2-1 Win
December 28, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Nick Drazenovic figured in all of the scoring for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Sunday as he registered the game-winning goal and an assist in a 2-1 win over the Norfolk Admirals at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton went ahead, 1-0, at 7:17 of the first period during a delayed call on the Admirals. While being hooked trying to collect a loose puck in front of the Admirals crease, Tom Kostopoulos was still able to sweep a shot in on net that was stopped by goalie Jason LaBarbera. Conor Sheary was in perfect position to swoop in and fire home the rebound for his ninth goal of the season.
The Admirals would take advantage of bad line a change by the Penguins and knot the score late in the second period. Brandon Yip set up Dave Steckel on the near circle where he had plenty of time to slip wrist shot under the leg pad of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goaltender Matt Murray with 2:14 remaining until the intermission.
Drazenovic put his team ahead once again at 5:07 of the third period, soon after the Penguins failed to convert on a power play. The veteran forward took the puck across the Norfolk blueline and ripped a shot from the far right hashmarks that pinged off of both posts before settling behind the goal line.
With the Admirals' net empty in favor of the extra attacker, Louis Leblanc had two chances in close in the final seconds of regulation, but Murray was able to make the stops as part of a 26-save effort that helped the Penguins clinch the win.
Murray's record goes to 6-6-2 on the season as he snapped a four-game winless streak. LaBarbera turned aside 21-of-23 for Norfolk. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was scoreless in four opportunities on the man-advantage and went 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins finish up their 2014 schedule with a match-up against the Hershey Bears on Wednesday, Dec. 31 at 3:05 p.m.
