Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - Manchester's five-game winning streak came to an end with a 3-0 loss to Portland in a VIP Series matchup at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday.
The loss ended the Monarchs' (22-7-1-1) nine-game winning streak at home. It also marked their first regulation loss this season to Portland (16-15-1-0).
"We had some good looks, we had some good opportunities," Head Coach Mike Stothers said. "I thought their goalie played extremely well. It's not so much the shot difference, but we had some good quality scoring chances."
After two scoreless periods, Portland defenseman Jordan Southron capitalized on a rebound less than a minute into the third. He sent the puck past Patrik Bartosak at 0:57 for his first career AHL goal.
With Bartosak off for the extra attacker, Philip Samuelsson scored an empty net tally for his first goal of the season at 19:05 in the third.
The Monarchs took Bartosak off again but Jordan Martinook finalized the 3-0 final with 0:18 remaining in the game.
The Monarchs are back in action on Wednesday night when they host St. John's on New Year's Eve at 7 p.m. and the game will be followed by fireworks, presented by Manchester Subaru. The game is a State Farm Insure a Winning Night with a glow-stick giveaway.
Notes:
This was the first time Manchester was shut out since Oct. 31 vs. Hershey (4-0). The Monarchs outshot the Pirates, 37-22. Patrik Bartosak made 19 saves on 20 shots, but suffered his third loss of the season. Brian O'Neill's point streak ended at seven games.
