Pirates Shut out Monarchs

Manchester, NH - The Portland Pirates (16-15-1-0) scored three times in the third period and got a 37 save shutout from Mike McKenna as they downed the Manchester Monarchs (22-7-1-1) by a score of 3-0 at Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday afternoon. The victory was the Pirates' second in their last three games, while the Monarchs saw their five-game winning streak snapped.

After a scoreless first period, Manchester controlled play in the second period, outshooting the Monarchs 17-4. But, they couldn't find the back of the net. Portland opened the scoring 57 seconds into the third period on the power play. Jordon Southorn one-timed a cross-ice pass by Manchester goalie Patrik Bartosak. Henrik Samuelsson and Jordan Martinook picked up assists on the goal, Southorn's first ever AHL goal.

The Pirates added two empty net goals in the final minute of the game. Philip Samuelsson scored his first goal of the season and first in a Pirates uniform at 19:04. The goal was also a power play and assisted by Corey Trivino. Martinook added another empty net goal, his seventh tally of the season, assisted by Justin Hodgman and Justin Hache at 19:41.

Portland was 2-for-4 on the power play, while Manchester went 0-for-8 on the man advantage.

McKenna (11-12-1) made 37 saves for his second shutout of the season. Bartosak (5-3-0) made 19 saves on 20 shots.
