October 26, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
San Antonio Rampage News Release
HAMILTON, ONTARIO (Oct. 26, 2014) - The San Antonio Rampage (5-2-0-0) completed a weekend sweep over the Hamilton Bulldogs (2-2-2-0) with a 5-2 win at the FirstOntario Centre on Sunday afternoon. Garrett Wilson recorded two goals and Connor Brickley, Rocco Grimaldi and Bobby Butler each tallied goals in the victory. Dan Ellis finished with 28 saves on the 30 shots he faced.
Brickley notched his second goal of the season to give the Rampage a 1-0 lead, taking a pass from Mark Mancari on the break and scoring with less than three minutes remaining in the opening period.
The Bulldogs opened the second period scoring, getting a goal from Christian Thomas to knot the game at one just over six minutes into the frame. An initial shot was stopped by Ellis but deflected off a skater in front of the net and over the shoulder of the Rampage goaltender.
San Antonio would take back the momentum and the lead shortly after, getting goals from Grimaldi and Butler just 49 seconds apart to take a 3-1 lead midway through the period. Garrett Wilson notched his second of the season, skating in on the wing and putting the puck past MacDonald to give San Antonio a 4-1 lead with less than 30 seconds remaining.
Hamilton struck quickly in the third, as Gabriel Dumont's blast from the high slot beat Ellis to make it 4-2 just over four minutes into the period. The goal marked the first third-period goal allowed by the Rampage so far this season. Wilson's empty-netter with 2:30 remaining gave the Silver and Black an insurance goal and ultimately, a 5-2 win.
San Antonio finished 0-for-3 on the power play while holding the Bulldogs scoreless on five opportunities with the man advantage.
KEY STAT
The Rampage have played their best hockey in the second period so far this season. Of the 22 goals San Antonio has tallied through their first seven games, 12 of them have come in the second frame, including three in Sunday's win.
The Bulldogs outshot San Antonio 30-26, including a 16-10 margin in the second period, marking the first time this season the Rampage have been outshot by their opponent.
TURNING POINT
Facing a five-minute penalty kill after a major penalty and game misconduct for boarding to Jonathan Racine, Logan Shaw drew a tripping call on a break, and the Rampage took advantage of the 4-on-4 opportunity. Grimaldi tallied a goal and Butler followed suit just 49 seconds later, as the Rampage took a 4-1 lead into the second intermission.
LINEUP NOTES
While San Antonio's scoring was very balanced amongst its top three lines on Sunday, the production of the Rampage's third line is worthy of note. Brickley's goal was his second of the season, and with the primary and secondary assists, respectively, Mancari tallied his fifth point and Olson his fourth on the season.
