Sharks Sink Pirates with Four Late Goals

The Portland Pirates (2-5-0-0) fell short to the Worcester Sharks (4-1-1-0) Sunday afternoon in Worcester after holding a 1-0 lead for the first forty minutes of play.Until the Sharks came back fighting in the third period scoring four unanswered goals all with the help of Shark's center Freddie Hamilton.

Fresh off their win last night in Portland the team came out hot in the first period. Evan Oberg found the back of the net at 4:16 in the first, picking up his first goal as a Pirate. The Pirates were able to hold off Sharks throughout the rest of the first frame of action.

Portland held the Sharks scoreless through a penalty kill in the second, when Jordan Martinook was sent to the box for hooking 28 seconds into the second. The Pirates found themselves 0-2 on power plays in the second period when the Sahrks' Michael Haley was sent to the box at 6:17 for a two minute holding minor and Eriah Hayes was sent in for a two minute minor for roughing at 18:57.

The third period is when the Sharks showed up on the ice as an entirely different team. Though the Pirates started the third period with 56 seconds left on the power play Worcester took over the ice. Freddie Hamilton tied the game at 2:41 in the third with an assist from Daniil Tarasov. Hamilton and Tarasov found success again when Portland's Brandon Gormley was sent to the box for a tripping call and gave the Sharks another power play. Hamilton found the back of the net again at 6:48 in the third, with another assist from Tarasov. A little over a minute later, Worcester's offense struck again, with a goal from Konrad Abeltshauer and assists from both Hamilton and Tarasov to bring the score to 3-1 at 7:53. Pirates pulled net minder Mike McKenna for the last two minutes of regulation to play six on five when Sharks center Evan Trupp scored on the empty net, bringing the game to the final 4-1 tally.

Both net minders had a good afternoons, the Sharks' Troy Grosenick saved 28 out of 29 of the Pirate's shots and McKenna saved 31 out of 35 of the Shark's shots.

The two teams will meet again at the DCU Center in Worcester on Wednesday, October 29th at 7 p.m. The Pirates head back home for a game Friday October 31st at 7 p.m. versus the St. John's Ice Caps for Portland Pirates Day.
