August 12, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
The Williamsport Crosscutters picked up their third consecutive win with seven solid innings from Mitch Gueller against Staten Island on Wednesday night. The 4-1 win moves Williamsport above .500 on the road this season as they improve to 12-11. Williamsport remains in first place in the Pinckney Division with a five and a half game lead over State College.
The Crosscutters got onto the scoreboard in the top of the second inning thanks to Jose Pujols. Leading off the inning Pujols drove a ball the opposite way over the right field wall for his first home run with the Cutters. The third inning started with a double from William Cuicas that went into left field. Cuicas would score two batters later on an RBI single from Andrew Amaro to make it 2-0.
Williamsport added to the lead in fourth inning as Jesus Posso drove in Venn Biter from third base to make it 3-0. Biter lead off the inning with a single and would reach third on back to back wild pitches. The three runs would seem to be plenty for Mitch Gueller who looked to pick up his seventh win of the season. Gueller worked through seven innings allowing just one run on five hits. The lone run for Staten Island came in the bottom of the sixth inning as a runner from third would score on a 5-4-3 double play turned by Williamsport.
The final run of the game would be scored by Williamsport in the top of the seventh inning. Cuicas scored from third base as Josh Tobias legged out an infield single to make it 4-1. Jacob Waguespack worked the final two innings striking out three batters while walking one. Waguespack didn't allow a hit en-route to his first save of the season. Gueller improved to 7-1 with the win while lowering his ERA to 1.84. Gueller leads the NYPL in wins as he entered tied with two other pitchers who had six.
