Four Lake Monsters Combine On Three-Hit Shutout In 1-0 Win
August 12, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Seth Brown had an RBI double in the third inning to knock home the only run of the game as four Lake Monster pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout as Vermont opened a three-game New York-Penn League series at historic Centennial Field with a 1-0 win over the Connecticut Tigers on Wednesday night.
Trace Loehr opened the bottom of the third with his second walk of the night and scored from first base two batters later when Brown lined his RBI double down the rightfield line into the corner. It was Vermont's first run after being helld scoreless the previous 16 innings and the Lake Monsters only run in the last 22 innings, but it was enough to give Vermont its sixth win in the last eight games.
That's because Bubba Derby, Kyle Friedrichs, Corey Miller and Ryan Gorton all combined to hold Connecticut scoreless, giving Vermont its fifth shutout win of the season, third by a 1-0 score and second over the Tigers in the opener of a three-game series at Centennial Field this season (beat Connecticut 1-0 back on July 24th).
Derby allowed one hit with one walk and three strikeouts over three innings to extend his personal scoreless streak to 10 2/3 innings and lowered his overall ERA to 0.76, allowing just two earned runs on 23 2/3 innings in eight appearances. Derby got into trouble in the second as Will Allen led off with a double and the Tigers later had runners on first-and-third with one out, but Derby got Shane Zeile to ground into a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play.
Friedrichs, making his first appearance out of the bullpen after nine starts, also tossed three scoreless innings with one hit and one strikeout. Miller allowed a one-out walk and single in the seventh inning, but got out of that juam with a forceout at third and strikeout. Gorton came on in the eighth inning and retired the final six batters with one strikeout to earn his second save of the season. Vermont pitchers have now allowed six hits or less in seven of the last eight games and lowered the team ERA to a season-low 3.87 overall.
Tigers starter Spenser Watkins (4-3) allowed one run on three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts over five innings to take the loss, while reliever Trent Szkutnik gave up two hits with three strikeouts over three scoreless innings for Connecticut (25-24).
Vermont (23-28) hosts Connecticut in the second of the three-game series on Thursday night starting at 7:05 pm. The first 750 fans entering the park when the gates open at 6:00 pm will receive a free Ted Williams Bobblehead courtesy of People's United Bank and ESPN 101.3.
