Dominant Pitching Leads 'Cats to 2-0 Win over Auburn
August 12, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
TROY, NY - Chris Murphy, Ryan Deemes and Jacob Dorris combined to strike out ten batters while allowing only five hits, as the Tri-City ValleyCats shut out the Auburn Doubledays 2-0 on Wednesday night, at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.
Murphy got the start for the 'Cats, registering five strikeouts, and allowing only four hits and one walk in five scoreless frames.
The right-hander left the game with a 1-0 lead, as Tri-City pushed a run across in the bottom of the first inning, when Johnny Sewald led off with a single, stole second and third base, then scored on a double to left field by Aaron Mizell.
Mizell added to the 'Cats lead in the bottom of the seventh, when he walked with two outs, stole second base, and advanced to third and came home to score on a pair of wild pitches.
After Murphy departed following the fifth inning, Deemes came in and tossed three scoreless frames of his own, striking out two batters, while allowing only two baserunners.
Dorris then entered the game in the top of the ninth, and earned his fourth save as a ValleyCat by striking out the side.
With the victory, and a loss by the Lowell Spinners, Tri-City increased their first-place lead in the New York-Penn League Stedler Division standings to two games. They will look to add to that margin when they take on the Doubledays on Thursday, in the second game of this three-game set. On the mound for the 'Cats will be RHP Trent Thornton (4-0, 3.32), with RHP Jefry Rodriguez (2-5. 5.36) getting the start for Auburn.
