
Connecticut Shutout in Opener at Vermont

BURLINGTON, VT-The Connecticut Tigers (25-24) lost on the road for just the fourth time in their last 13 road games when they fell 1-0 to the Vermont Lake Monsters (23-28) on Wednesday night. It was the sixth time Connecticut had been shutout this year and the second time they have lost 1-0 at Vermont this season.
Vermont scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the third inning against Connecticut starter Spenser Watkins (4-3). Second basemen Trace Loehr (1-2, 2 BB, R) led the inning off with a walk. Still on first with one out first basemen Seth Brown doubled him home giving Vermont the only run they would need.
Connecticut had their best chance to score in the second. First basemen Will Allen (2-3, 2B, BB) started the inning with a double and was on third with one out when centerfielder Joey Havrilak walked. However, a double play ball ended the inning.
Spenser Watkins pitched the first five innings surrendering just one run on three hits while striking out seven and walking one. Trent Szkutnik worked the final three innings allowing just two hits and striking out three.
Bubba Derby started the game for Vermont and went the first three giving up just a hit and striking out three with one walk. In all Vermont used four pitchers on the night. Kyle Fredrichs (1-1) got the win throwing the middle three innings of the game. Fredrichs also gave up just one hit and struck out one. Corey Miller pitched a scoreless seventh and Ryan Gorton (SV 2) got the final six outs in order to pick up the save.
Connecticut will play the second game of the three game series at Vermont on Thursday night. The first pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
