Auburn Doubledays News Release
TROY, NY - Both teams managed just five hits while committing no errors in a pitcher's duel that the Doubledays dropped 2-0 to the ValleyCats in game one of the series.
With one out in the top of the first, Max Schrock doubled into the left field corner. Kelvin Gutierrez dug in next and moved him over to third with a ground out up the middle that was fielded by the shortstop Antonio Nunez. Unfortunately with Schrock on third and two outs, Rhett Wiseman struck out to end the threat.
In the bottom of the first, the ValleyCats took a lead it would never give up. Johnny Seawald led off with single up the middle. The speedy outfielder then stole second and third for his league leading 24th and 25th stolen bases of the season. Two batters later Aaron Mizell doubled into left to bring in Seawald and gave Tri-City a 1-0 lead.
And inning later in the bottom of the second, the ValleyCats had another opportunity. Dexture McCall led off with a double. After Taylor Hearn recorded two quick outs, Marlon Avea was hit by a pitch. Seawald dug in next and walked to load the bases with two outs. Nunez stepped up to face Hearn, but struck out swinging to end the second.
The Doubledays last threat came in the third. Randy Encarnacion singled with one out and stole second before Darryl Florentino walked. Unfortunately Schrock and Gutierrez couldn't bring them in.
Fast forward to the seventh when the ValleyCats scored the second and final run of the game. With two outs, Mizell drew a walk. The outfielder then stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on another wild pitch to put the ValleyCats up 2-0.
In the eighth and ninth, the Doubledays didn't record a hit, but in the eighth Melvin Rodriguez did reach second with one out until he was stranded.
