Cyclones Comeback Comes up Short in 7-6 Loss

BROOKLYN, NY (August 12, 2015) -- Despite a valiant offensive rally in the bottom of the ninth, the Cyclones fell to the State College Spikes Tuesday night by a close score of 7-6. Right-hander Tyler Badamo (2-6) takes the loss for Brooklyn after 5.1 innings of work, during which he allowed six runs, all earned, one home run, and struck out six. The Cyclones swallow their second consecutive loss at home by only one run, despite notching half as many hits as State College throughout the contest.

It was a hard-fought game from the very start. Jhohan Acevedo kicked off the first for State College with a leadoff triple and a sacrifice fly would score one for the Spikes. But Brooklyn bats came out strong as well. After Vinny Siena singled, back-to-back walks for David Thompson and Jeff Diehl loaded the bases with Cyclones. A single from Enmanuel Zabala then brought both Siena and Thompson home as Brooklyn took 2-1 lead at the end of the first.

The next frame was another tough one for Badamo. Off the first pitch sent his way, State College's Orlando Olivera sent his fourth home run of the season soaring over the left field wall of MCU Park to leadoff the second. Badamo, however, remained composed and went on to induce a pop fly and two strike outs to end the inning.

Tied at 2-2, the Boys of Summer came into the third with offensive fire. After Thompson was hit by a pitch, a double from Diehl put runners on second and third. Thompson scored on a wild pitch with Zabala batting, while Diehl was brought home by a single from Jose Garcia, giving the Cyclones a 4-2 lead.

State College was quick to counter the two-run deficit. After a leadoff double, a wild pitch and a single would notch one on the board for the Spikes and shrink Brooklyn's lead to just one run by the fourth.

The Cyclones said goodbye to their lead in the sixth. Badamo began the frame with a leadoff walk and a pair of singles followed. Right-hander Nicco Blank then came in from the stretch to relieve Badamo with the bases loaded, one out, and a one run lead on the line. A double and a ground out would score three runs for State College as they captured a 6-4 lead.

The Spikes furthered their lead in the eighth to 7-4 following a pair of doubles and a ground out but Blank contained the damage to a lone run. The Cyclones offense rallied in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the ninth, as back-to-back walks for Alfredo Reyes and Tucker Tharp got Brooklyn on base and a new pitcher on the mound for State College. Both 'Clones then scored on a wild pitch by Pedro Echemendia, limiting the Spikes' lead to just one run. But Brooklyn's rally fell just short and the game ended with a fly out from Thompson and a strike out for Diehl.

Brooklyn looks to rebound from tonight's loss when they go head-to-head with State College once again in the second of a three-game set. Southpaw Kevin Canelon (4-3) will take the mound for the Cyclones with first pitch set for 7:00 pm.
