West Virginia Black Bears News Release
The West Virginia Black Bears were defeated by the Aberdeen IronBirds 3-1 on Wednesday night at Monongalia County Ballpark. With the loss, West Virginia falls to an overall record of 25-27 while Aberdeen improves to 25-26.
The Black Bears got the early advantage in the third inning when C Christian Kelley led the inning off with a bunt single and then later scored on a wild pitch while CF Casey Hughston was at the plate. Despite taking the lead early, this is all the scoring the Black Bears would do on Wednesday night.
In the fifth inning, Aberdeen's Drew Turbin doubled and advanced to third on an error before beating the tag at home on a fielder's choice to tie the game 1-1. The IronBirds went on to score two more runs in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead which would hold the rest of the game.
SP Bret Helton had a solid performance on the mound despite getting tagged with the loss (2-5). The right-hander tossed 5.2 innings, allowing only three hits and three runs (1 earned) to go with two strikeouts. RP's Nick Hibbing and Daniel Zamora combined to pitch the final 3.1 innings of the game, giving up no runs and striking out a combined seven Aberdeen hitters. IronBirds RP Reid Love received the win (2-3) after pitching 3.0 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
The Black Bears and IronBirds will meet again on Thursday, August 13 at Monongalia County Ballpark with a scheduled first pitch of 7:05 p.m. Thursday will be WVU night at the ballpark where the first 1,000 fans will receive a "Mountaineers Go First" t-shirt at the gates.
