Power Snap Losing Streak, Beat Suns 8-5
April 26, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Hagerstown took a 1-0 first inning lead when Bryce Harper, the top prospect in the Washington National's farm system, drove a Tyler Waldron pitch over the right field wall for his fourth home run of the season.
West Virginia answered in the home half of the first. Gift Ngoepe and Matt Curry each singled, and both scored on a double by Rogelio Noris. Two batters later, Mel Rojas Jr. singled off Suns starter Matt Grace to build a 3-1 lead. The Power would add a run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly, and two more in the fourth on Matt Curry's fourth home run of the season to create a 6-1 edge.
The Suns began chipping away in the fifth inning on a home run by Michael Taylor. Taylor was nearly credited with his first home run of the season two innings earlier when he hit a ball over the right field wall but did not step on first base. West Virginia appealed to first and Taylor was called out. This incident led to the eventual ejection of Hagerstown manager Brian Daubach.
The Power regained a five-run lead in the bottom if the sixth on a Ngoepe double, but the Suns scored twice in the seventh against Brooks Pounders to cut the deficit down to 7-4. With two outs, Hagerstown had the tying run at the plate, but Pounders struck out Harper swinging to end the threat. Each team plated one more run to close out the scoring at 8-5.
Waldron (3-1) picked up the win with five innings of six-hit ball, while Grace (1-3) was charged with the loss. Six different Power players had two hits apiece, while Curry, Noris, and Dan Grovatt drove in two runs each.
Three different Suns had multi-hit games, and four players drove in a run each.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are slated to add 2010 first round pick Jameson Tallion to West Virginia's roster on Wednesday in time for him to make his professional debut against Hagerstown. The Suns will counter with right-hander Chris McKenzie. The gates at Appalachian Power Park will open at 6:00 pm with a 7:05 pm first pitch.
