POWER REPLAY: West Virginia dropped its sixth straight with a 3-0 loss to Hagerstown last night. The Suns scored an unearned run in the first and added a run in the fourth and fifth innings. The Power offense managed seven hits, but could not string together multiple hits in any inning other than the fourth. Cameron Selik and Christopher Manno combined for the shutout, while Zack Dodson took the loss.
SIX STRAIGHT: The Power's current six game losing streak is the club's longest since mid-July 2010. West Virginia had three six-game slides lastseason. The club record for consecutive losses is seven, a dubious feat accomplished five times since 2005. The Power lost their first seven games during the '05 season, and suffered another seven game run later that summer. West Virginia also saw seven game losing streaks each year from 2007 until 2009.
SWEPT ASIDE: West Virginia was swept by Kannapolis, losing five straight at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. The Power were swept only once during 2010, falling in a three game series against Lakewood at Appalachian Power Park from June 10 though 12. West Virginia had never been swept during any five game series in the history of the organization, and have only lost five straight games (or more) 10 times since 2005.
HARPERSTOWN SUNS: The Hagerstown Suns continue their series in Charleston tonight. Hagerstown's roster features the Washington Nationals top prospect Bryce Harper, the first overall selection during the 2010 draft. The gates at Appalachian Power Park will open early on Thursday, April 28 and Friday, April 29 so fans can watch both teams take batting practice. Members of the media will only be granted access to Harper after games that he has factored in.
SOMEWHAT SUNNY HISTORY: West Virginia leads the all time series with Hagerstown by one victory after last night's loss. The Power have the edge in their own yard during this series, going 21-16 since 2005 against the Suns, including a 4-4 mark at home last year.
A NUMBERS GAME: Rogelio Noris will now wear number 35, as he did during the entire 2010 season with West Virginia. Noris had worn number 48 from Opening Day until yesterday.
PINPOINT CONTROL: West Virginia pitchers have combined to walk just 32 batters this season, by far the fewest in the league. Hickory has walked a league-high 88 batters over 152 innings. Power pitchers have also walked the second fewest batters in all of Minor League Baseball, one more than the Frederick Keys from the Carolina League.
POWER POINTS: The Pittsburgh Pirates are slated to add Jameson Tallion to the Power roster in time to make his professional debut on Wednesday night against Hagerstown... Brandon Cumpton pitched three perfect innings of relief last night and lowered his ERA from 17.72 to 13.83... Dan Grovatt's 13-game on -base streak was snapped last night by going 0-3, while Matt Curry's on-base streak was extended to 14.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh beat Washington 4-2 in a make-up game at PNC Park. Brandon Wood drove in two runs in his Pirate debut... Indianapolis lost both halves of a doubleheader at Columbus, losing 6-1 and 6-5... Altoona edged Harrisburg 8-7... Bradenton beat Palm Beach 8-1. Brett Lorin earned the win in relief of Philip Irwin.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com. Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
