Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - 2B Jonathan Roof belted a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth and drove in five total RBIs, helping lead the Hickory Crawdads to a 9-1 victory against the Augusta GreenJackets, before 1,881 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
The Crawdads (13-6) cracked the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second when 1B Jhonny Gomez knocked in LF Jake Skole from second base with a two-out RBI single, putting the 'Dads in front, 1-0.
Hickory starter RHP Justin Grimm kept the narrow lead intact with five scoreless innings, before Augusta tied it in the top of the sixth. The GreenJackets loaded the bases against Grimm with two outs, leading to RHP Zach Osborne (W, 1-0) coming on in relief to try to escape the jam. RF Ryan Scoma drove an RBI single, however, plating DH Raynor Campbell and squaring the score, 1-1.
Osborne, though, got out of the rest of the inning with no further damage done, and went on to log 2.1 scoreless frames of relief after Grimm lasted the first 5.2 innings and racked up eight strikeouts.
The Crawdads got right back in front with one big swing from Roof in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs and the bases clear, Skole kept the inning going with a single, followed by C Tomas Telis being hit by a pitch from LHP Mario Rodriguez (L, 0-1). RHP Matt Graham took over after that and issued a walk to Gomez to load the bases, before Roof crushed the first pitch of his at-bat over the left field wall for the grand slam, making it 5-1. It is the second grand slam hit by the 'Dads in the last three games.
Hickory continued to swing away, plating four more unanswered runs the rest of the way to cruise to the 9-1 win. DH Odubel Herrera and 3B Christian Villanueva both hit solo bombs in the seventh, and Roof drove in another with an RBI double in the eighth, before scoring on a wild pitch later in the inning to cap the scoring.
