
Schoop Hits Walk Off Homer In 8-7 Win Over Savannah

Salisbury, Md. - Jonathan Schoop blasted a bottom of the eleventh inning home run to lift the Delmarva Shorebirds (10-9) to an 8-7 walk off win over the Savannah Sand Gnats (7-11) on Tuesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The Shorebirds have won a season high five straight games. Mike Flacco finished with a season best four RBIs.
Schoop started the game 0-for-4 before hitting the game tying RBI in the ninth inning and the winning home run in the 11th inning.
The Shorebirds stormed to an early lead in the first inning. With two outs, Manny Machado blasted his second home run in as many nights to give the Shorebirds a 1-0 lead. Then, Kieron Pope and Kipp Schutz connected on back-to-back singles. Mike Flacco followed with a three-run homer over the left field wall to build the lead to 4-0.
The Sand Gnats scored six unanswered runs between the fourth and seventh innings to take a 6-4 lead. In the seventh, Rafael Fernandez and Cory Vaughn hit RBI singles to give the Sand Gnats the lead. The Shorebirds went without a hit between the second and sixth innings.
The Shorebirds cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the seventh. Flacco, Justin Dalles and Brenden Webb reached base and Steve Bumbry hit a bouncer to first to score Flacco.
The two teams traded runs in the eighth inning.
The Shorebirds trailed 7-6 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. Steve Bumbry led off with a sharp double to the wall in right field. Then, Jonathan Schoop bounced a double to the right field corner to score Bumbry. The Shorebirds left the winning run at second base in the ninth.
In the bottom of the 11th, Schoop hit his third home run of the season to give the Shorebirds a 8-7 win.
Aaron Swenson earned the win by throwing a flawless top of the eleventh inning. Guillaume Leduc was pinned with the loss.
The Shorebirds new Rally Banana appeared before the rally in the ninth inning and before the home run by Schoop in the 11th inning.
The Shorebirds and Sand Gnats return to the diamond on Wednesday, April 27 for game three of the five game set. RHP Scott Copeland is the scheduled starter.
