Charleston RiverDogs News Release

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Jim Murphy cracked two home runs and notched 6 RBI to lead the Lakewood BlueClaws to a 11-1 rout of the Charleston RiverDogs in South Atlantic League action Tuesday night in front of a crowd of 3,644 fans at FirstEnergy Park.

Lakewood broke the contest wide open over the first two innings, plating eight runs off Charleston starter Kramer Sneed (1-2).

Sneed was one out away from escaping the first unblemished, but the BlueClaws struck for three runs instead. Jim Murphy served a bloop single to center field to plate Geancarlo Mendez, and Zach Collier added on with a two-run triple to the wall in center to stake Lakewood to a 3-0 advantage.

The BlueClaws entered the night tied for ninth in the SAL in home runs but showed off their pop to power a pair of homers to highlight a five-run second frame.

Ninth place hitter Edgar Duran started the assault with his first home run of the year, a no-doubter to left. After an Aaron Altherr single and a RiverDogs throwing error, Mendez registered his second RBI in as many innings with a single into left. Jeremy Barnes rapped a double to left, giving Murphy a chance to follow Mendez's example and add to a banner night. Murphy did just that, hammering his team-leading fifth jack of the year - a three-run shot - to put the BlueClaws up 8-0.

Sneed labored through another 1.1 innings, but took home an ugly final line. The 6-3 lefty was unable to generate any momentum from two stellar starts at home, allowing eight runs on eleven hits in 3.1 innings, while managing to strike out six.

Richard Martinez was unable to stop the bleeding for the RiverDogs in the sixth, as the BlueClaws played long ball again to take a commanding 11-0 lead. Barnes singled to center in front of Murphy, who clocked his second home run of the night for the double-digit cushion. Two batters later, Cameron Rupp atoned for his slow start at home, launching a majestic shot off the scoreboard in left.

David Buchanan (3-0) kept the RiverDogs offense under wraps over his 7.0 innings of shutout ball, scattering seven hits and a walk while striking out three. Buchanan pounded the strike zone and pitched to contact with the luxury of the lofty lead. It was the second straight night the BlueClaws' starting pitcher logged 7.0 innings versus the RiverDogs, with southpaw Mario Hollands having turned the trick in the series opener.

Charleston avoided a shutout by pushing across a run off Lakewood reliever Garett Claypool in the ninth. Gary Sanchez doubled to right and trotted home to touch the plate when a Rob Segedin grounder went through the legs of Mendez at third.

Slade Heathcott enjoyed his third straight multi-hit night with a 2-4 outing in defeat for Charleston, while Ramon Flores drew a walk to reach base for the 15th consecutive game.

The RiverDogs and BlueClaws have a quick turnaround before meeting for a game three matinee Wednesday at 11:05 am. Right-hander Zach Nuding (2-0, 4.61 ERA), fresh off a career-high eight strikeouts in an April 21 victory versus Greenville, is expected to oppose southpaw Jesse Biddle (0-2, 5.54 ERA) of Lakewood.
