Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Hickory, NC - The Hickory Crawdads scored eight times in innings six through eight to jump out to a huge advantage and earn a 9-1 win over the Augusta GreenJackets on Tuesday afternoon in Hickory.
With the game tied at one in the sixth inning, bad luck allowed things to unravel for GreenJackets starter Mario Rodriguez. A two-out, bad hop grounder over first baseman Josh Mazzola's head put a runner at first and kept the inning alive for Tomas Telis, who was hit by Rodriguez's final pitch of the game. Matt Graham came out of the Augusta bullpen and walked the bases full before giving up a first pitch grand slam to Jonathan Roof as the 'Dads pulled out to a 5-1 lead.
Rodriguez (0-1) threw well for the GreenJackets and at one point retired ten of 12 consecutive hitters he faced before running into the sixth inning trouble. He allowed two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out three.
The GreenJackets had a chance to cut into the Hickory lead in the seventh with back-to-back singles from Ydwin Villegas and Chris Lofton but Crawdads reliever Zach Osborne (1-0) buckled down to get out of the jam.
Things began to blow wide open for Hickory in the bottom of the seventh as Odubel Herrera and Christian Villanueva each hit solo home runs off reliever Ryan Bradley to grow the Hickory lead to 7-1. In the eighth, two more scored on Roof's RBI double and a pair of wild pitches from Edward Concepcion.
Hickory starter Justin Grimm threw well in a no decision, limiting the GreenJackets early on. Grimm picked up seven of his eight strikeouts in the first three innings, allowing a run on five hits and two walks.
The Crawdads struck first in the second on an RBI single by Jhonny Gomez to take a 1-0 lead. Augusta answered with a run when Ryan Scoma singled in a run with two outs on the inning's third hit. All the scoring in the game came with two outs except for Herrera's seventh inning home run for Hickory.
The teams meet for the third game in the series on Wednesday night as Seth Rosin (0-1) makes his third start for the GreenJackets and will face Matt Thompson. First pitch will come at 7:05 in Hickory with the pregame action beginning at 6:50, airing online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
