SALISBURY, MD -Delmarva third baseman Jonathan Schoop drilled a home run to left field with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning off Gnats reliever Guillaume Leduc to give the Delmarva Shorebirds an 8-7 win over the Gnats Tuesday night. It is the fourth straight defeat for Savannah (7-11).
After the Shorebirds (10-9) took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, the Gnats chipped away all night, eventually tying the game at 4-4 with two runs in the top of the sixth. The Gnats scored twice in the top of the seventh, on RBI singles from CF Rafael Fernandez and RF Cory Vaughn, to take a 6-4 lead.
The Shorebirds picked up a run back in the seventh to make the score 6-5. In the eighth, 2B Wilfredo Tovar singled into right to bring home LF Alonzo Harris with Savannah's seventh run to again put the Gnats up two. Tovar finished 2-5 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. The infielder is hitting .588 (10-for-17) in his last five games.
Delmarva scored in the bottom of the eighth to pull within one at 7-6 and used back-to-back doubles off Josh Edgin to begin the ninth to even the game at 7-7. After the two doubles tied the game, Edgin struck out the next three hitters to keep the game even and send it to extras.
