SOUTH BEND, IN - Christian Lara and Brian Ruggiano notched RBI singles in the top of the ninth inning, untying a scoreless game and propelling the Great Lakes Loons to a 2-0 victory Tuesday night over the South Bend Silver Hawks.
Pitching dominated on a foggy, misty evening in Northern Indiana. Josh Wall allowed just two hits over seven scoreless frames for his best pitching performance of the season. Justin Miller (3-0) fired a scoreless eighth inning and was in line for the victory when the Loons rallied in the ninth.
In the top of the ninth, South Bend reliever Bradin Hagens (0-2) retired the first two outs of the inning. But Rafael Ynoa followed with a single and stole second base, putting him in position to score on a single up the middle by Lara. Ruggiano followed with a single to left scoring Lara for the Loons second run of the game.
South Bend threatened in the bottom of the ninth inning against reliever Luis Vasquez. After a single to Chris Owings and a hit batsman against Bobby Borchering, Matt Davidson bounced into a second-to-short-to-first double play. David Nick walked, but with runners at first and third, Vasquez got Matt Helm to swing and miss and three low and away sliders for the final out of the game.
The Loons out-hit the silver Hawks 11-4, including three hits by Lara and two each from Jerry Sands and Ynoa. The Loons are now 8-0 against South Bend this season.
The Loons (20-12) and Silver Hawks (16-17) play Wednesday morning in the final game of a brief three-game road trip at 10:30am. Right-hander Brett Wallach (2-0, 3.23 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Loons against South Bend right-hander Eric Smith (3-2, 2.43). The game will be carried live on ESPN 100.9-FM.
