
Chiefs Swept In Tuesday DH

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs lost both halves of a doubleheader Tuesday to the Clinton LumberKings, losing the first game 13-3 and the second game 11-2. The two losses drop the Chiefs to 19-14 on the season and knock them out of first place in the Midwest League's Western Division.
In game one the LumberKings got on the board in the first off starter Rob Whitenack. Vince Catricala singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Dennis Raben was hit by a pitch.
Brandon Bantz singled and drove in Catricala for the first run of the game. A throwing error by Matt Cerda on a grounder off the bat of Wellington Dotel allowed Raben to score before a Mario Martinez two-RBI single made the score 4-0.
The Chiefs cut in to the lead in the bottom of the first off starter Erasmo Ramirez. Logan Watkins reached on a fielders' choice and advanced to third base on a Catricala throwing error that allowed Cerda to reach first. A Greg Rohan sacrifice fly scored Watkins and made it 4-1.
Clinton added a run quickly in the third inning thanks to a solo home run by Catricala to lead off the inning that made it 5-1.
The Chiefs added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Watkins doubled and advanced to third on a ground out to second base off the bat of Cerda. Rohan reached on a fielders' choice to third base that resulted in Watkins being tagged out in a rundown before Justin Bour hit his first home run of the season to make it 5-3.
The LumberKings got both of those runs back in the top of the fourth, still facing Whitenack. Martinez singled and advanced to third on bunt singles from Matt Cerione and Shaver Hansen to load the bases. Nick Franklin grounded into a double play to score one run and a James Jones RBI double made it 7-3.
Clinton increased the lead in the top of the fifth off Whitenack and reliever Ronny Morla. Raben singled and advanced to third following singles by Bantz and Dotel. Martinez hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Raben. The Chiefs brought Morla in from the bullpen and he gave up a two- RBI single to Hansen to make the score 10-3.
The LumberKings kept the hit parade going in the sixth inning. Bantz singled and advanced to second on a Dotel base hit. Martinez hit his third home run of the season over the left-field fence to give Clinton the 13-3 lead.
Whitenack (2-2) pitched four and 2/3 innings and gave up ten runs, seven earned, on 12 hits while striking out three for the loss. Morla pitched two and 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on five hits while striking out five.
In the second game the LumberKings stayed hot, scoring in the first inning off starter Jeffry Antigua. Dotel reached on a three base error by Richard Jones in right field and scored on a Catricala single to give Clinton a 1-0 lead.
Clinton added to their lead in the top of the second inning. James Jones doubled to lead off and scored on a double by Henry Contreras. Contreras advanced to third on a Cerione double and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Gabriel Noriega to make the score 3-0.
The offense continued to click for the LumberKings in the third inning. Dotel doubled and scored on a Martinez single before James Jones hit a two-run home run. Contreras walked and Cerione hit a two-run homer to push the lead to 8-0. The LumberKings added another run in the fifth off reliever Larry Suarez when Henry Contreras homered to lead off the inning for a 9-0 lead.
The runs kept coming for Clinton as they increased their lead again in the sixth inning off reliever James Leverton. Dotel singled and reached second base on a throwing error before Dennis Raben clobbered a home run to right-center to make the score 11-0.
The Chiefs finally got a run across in the sixth inning off starter Anthony Vasquez. Jose Valdez reached on an infield single and advanced to third on a Hak-Ju Lee double. Rohan hit a ground ball out to second base that scored Valdez to make the score 11-1.
The Chiefs scored one more in the seventh inning off reliever Brian Moran. DJ Fitzgerald singled and advanced to second on a Richard Jones single. Fitzgerald and Jones moved up on a passed ball and George Matheus grounded out to second to score Fitzgerald for an 11-2 score. Moran struck out Valdez to end the game.
Antigua (0-2) pitched three innings and gave up eight runs, seven earned, on eight hits while walking two and striking out three for the loss. Suarez pitched two innings and gave up one run on two hits while walking one and striking out four. Leverton pitched two innings and allowed two runs on three hits and struck out two.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game -Game One: Justin Bour (1B)- Bour went two-for-two with two RBI and hit his first home run of the season in the third inning.
Game Two: Hak-Ju Lee (SS)- Lee went two-for-three with a double and was the only Chiefs player with multiple hits in game two.
Notes... The Chiefs lost two games in one series at home for the first time all season Tuesday...The Chiefs have allowed a run in the first inning in four consecutive games...Six of the Chiefs' seven home runs this season have come against Clinton...The 12 hits allowed by Whitenack in the first game is a career high...The four home runs allowed in game two is a season high for the Chiefs...The Chiefs are 4-8 in day games this season...The Chiefs have allowed 50 runs and 55 hits in their last four day games with losses of 11-1, 15-6, 13-3, and 11- 2...The Chiefs have lost four games in a row for the first time this season...Before Raben's two- run home run James Leverton had not allowed a run all season...Rohan had an eight-game hit streak ended in game one, Richard Jones has the longest active streak for the Chiefs at seven...Every pitcher that took the mound for the Chiefs Tuesday allowed a home run...The Chiefs and LumberKings finish the series Wednesday at 6:30 PM...Wednesday is Wacky Weiner Wednesday featuring free hot dogs and peanuts for all fans in attendance through the seventh inning...Wednesday is Battle of the Sexes night...The Chiefs will pitch RH Nick Struck (2-3, 3.63) against Clinton's RH Tyler Blandford (1-2, 3.96)...The game can be heard starting with the pre- game show at 6:15 PM on 96.5 ESPN Radio and www.peoriachiefs.com.
