South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - South Bend starter Charles Brewer and Great Lakes hurler Josh Wall each had outstanding performances Tuesday night at Coveleski Stadium. However, it was the bullpens that decided the contest on a cold and wet night, resulting in a 2-0 victory for Great Lakes.

The Loons picked up the game's lone tallies in the ninth off of South Bend reliever Bradin Hagens (LP, 0-2). With two outs and nobody on, Great Lakes second baseman Rafael Ynoa singled and stole second to put himself in scoring position. Christian Lara drove home Ynoa for the game's winning run with a single up the middle and advanced to second on the throw. Lara then scored on an RBI single by Brian Ruggiano to put the Loons up 2-0.

South Bend looked to tie the game in the bottom half of the ninth as Chris Owings led off the inning with a single and Bobby Borchering was hit by a pitch. However, Luis Vasquez (SV, 7) got Matt Davidson to ground in to a 4-6-3 double play and struck out Matt Helm two batters later to conclude the contest.

Both starting pitchers turned in their best outings of the year. Brewer (ND) tossed a season-high 6.2 scoreless innings, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out a team high 10. Wall threw 7.0 blank frames, also a season high, and allowed only two hits while fanning two. Justin Miller (WP, 3-0) relieved Wall and threw a scoreless eighth to record the victory.

The biggest threat against Brewer came in the top of the fourth inning. Blake Smith walked to start the inning and advanced to third on a single by Jerry Sands, who moved to second on an error by Keon Broxton. However, Brewer got Angelo Songco to foul out before striking out Jaime Ortiz and Gorman Erickson to retire the side.

South Bend's best opportunity to score on Wall came in the fifth. Matt Helm started the inning with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a groundout. However, third baseman Ruggiano shuffled a slow grounder hit by Tyson Van Winkle to catcher Gorman Erickson who applied the tag to Helm.

The Silver Hawks will look to salvage game three against the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers) tomorrow morning at 10:30 AM on a School Day at the Cove. RHP Eric Smith (3-2, 2.43 ERA) will throw for South Bend while Great Lakes will counter with RHP Brett Wallach (2-0, 3.23 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 10:10 AM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
