Bridgeport Islanders News Release
PORTLAND, ME -- Derek Whitmore and Jeff Cowan each netted first period goals and Jhonas Enroth made 22 saves as the Portland Pirates defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 2-1, Saturday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Sean Bentivoglio scored the Sound Tigers only goal.
Whitmore gave the Pirates the lead early on, scoring his ninth goal of the year 1:19 into the game. Felix Schutz sent a shot on goal that deflected off a Sound Tigers defenseman and bounced to Whitmore at the side of the net. Whitmore quickly snapped a shot into the corner of the goal to give Portland the lead.
With 1:04 left in the first, Kyle Wanvig ripped a shot from the blue-line that Nathan Lawson turned aside. However, the rebound landed right on Cowan's stick and he tapped it into the open side of the net to tally his 12th goal of the year and give the Pirates a two goal lead after one period.
Portland outshot Bridgeport 27-23 for the game. Enroth made a save on a shorthanded breakaway by Bentivoglio to spoil a Bridgeport scoring chance in the first period. The Sound Tigers could not take advantage of a 5-on-3 power-play midway through the first, as Enroth made saves on Trevor Smith and Matt Martin during that time. Late in the second period, Enroth made a glove save to spoil a 2-on-1 breakaway by Greg Mauldin and Tyler Haskins.
Lawson did his part to keep the Sound Tigers in the game as he finished with 25 saves on the night. Lawson's best save came when he did a split to make a stop on a shot from the slot by Mark Mancari in the third period.
Bentivoglio finally got the Sound Tigers on the board with 6:05 left in regulation. Anton Klementyev fired a shot from the blue-line which Bentivoglio tipped in front of the net, deflecting the puck past Enroth and into the goal. It was Bentivoglio's 15th goal of the year.
The Sound Tigers return to home ice Sunday afternoon as they host the Norfolk Admirals at the Arena at Harbor Yard. Face-off is set for 3:00 pm. The game will feature the Sound Tigers annual Pink Rink Night for cancer awareness. For tickets, please call TicketMaster at 1-800-745-3000.
