Pirates Squeak Past Bridgeport

Portland, Maine - Derek Whitmore and Jeff Cowan scored first period goals to lead the Portland Pirates to a narrow 2-1 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of 6,200 at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The victory was the Pirates third straight and completed a weekend sweep of the Sound Tigers. Portland moved to 24-16-5-2 with the win. Sean Bentivoglio registered the lone goal for Bridgeport, now winless in four and 22-21-2-5 on the season. The Pirates struck early in the game, only 1:19 in as Whitmore got the ball rolling for a 1-0 advantage. Cowan capped the period with a power-play goal with 64 seconds left in the opening 20 minutes to give Portland a 2-0 lead after one. Cowan's goal extended the Pirates streak of consecutive games with a power-play goal to 13. The 2-0 advantage stood until midway through the third period when Bentivoglio's deflection eluded Pirates goaltender Jhonas Enroth to make for a close finish. The Pirates out shot the Sound Tigers 27-23 in the game as Jhonas Enroth posted the win. The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were 1. Cowan; 2. Portland defenseman Mike Kostka and 3. Bentivoglio.

The Pirates complete a five-game home stand Tuesday with a special 11 a.m. game against the Manchester Monarchs. Let's Go! A total of 23 Maine schools will be represented with more than 3,500 students, administrators, teachers and chaperones taking part in this inaugural event.
