Portland, Maine -The Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League welcome students from around the state to a special educational day of hockey full of fun and interactive learning activities that promote physical activity and healthy eating for the students of Maine this Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

A total of 23 Maine schools will be represented along with more than 3,500 students, administrators, teachers and chaperones will take part in this inaugural event and watch the Pirates face-off against the Manchester Monarchs. Through the use of an interactive workbook, in-game activities and educational messaging on the video scoreboard from members of the Pirates, students will learn about healthy lifestyles while enjoying exciting Pirates action.

Let's Go! Goes to a Pirates Game is a component of the Let's Go! initiative. The primary goal of the initiative is to increase physical activity and healthy eating for all children from birth to age 18. The school intervention uses the 5-2-1-0 mnemonic to reinforce the importance of four positive health behaviors that are recommended to increase physical activity and healthy eating. They include:

5 eating 5 fruits and vegetables per day

2 limiting screen time (television or computer) to 2 hours per day

1 engaging in one hour of physical activity per day and

0 increasing water consumption as well as low fat milk while limiting sugar sweetened beverages

Let's Go! is a community-based initiative to promote healthy lifestyle choices for children, youth and families. The goal is to increase physical activity and healthy eating for children and youth. Let's Go! started as a demonstration project in 12 Greater Portland communities: Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, Gorham, Falmouth, Freeport, North Yarmouth, Portland, Scarborough, South Portland, Westbrook, Windham and Yarmouth.

On Tuesday, students will be presented with the opportunity to learn in a new school environment, the Cumberland County Civic Center, and watch, high performance/elite level athletes who are excellent examples of what can be achieved through healthy living.

A number of healthy activities will be instituted in the Civic Center specifically for Tuesday's game.

* Walking course throughout the arena for students upon arrival

* Video board messaging from players throughout the game to support the Let's Go! Program

* Interactive educational health booklets to be completed by all students

* In the seat beach volleyball

* Mascot appearances by Let's Go! Mascot Redy and Pirates Mascots Salty Pete and Crackers

* Player-led in-your-seat exercises

The Pirates and Sound Tigers complete their back-to-back set tonight (Saturday) at the Cumberland County Civic Center in a 7 p.m. start. It's a Labatt Blue Light Hockey Night in Portland with the first 4,000 fans into the game receiving a free Pirates hat courtesy of Time Warner Cable. Saturday's game will also mark the conclusion of USA Hockey's "Hockey Weekend Across America".
