Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
Moosic, Pennsylvania - Tyler Phillips struck out six over six innings while the 'Lehigh Valley IronPigs (8-8) offense banged out 10 hits en route to a 9-3 victory over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (12-6) on Friday night at PNC Field.
Getting to work immediately the IronPigs loaded the bases in the first. With two outs, Esteban Quiroz worked a walk to force in a run and Aramis Garcia followed with a base-clearing double to make it 4-0.
In the last of the first, the RailRiders scratched out a run on a two-out T.J. Rumfield double, but Phillips held the line and limited the damage.
Cal Stevenson doubled to lead off the fourth and moved to third on a flyout and then scored on a Simon Muzziotti sacrifice fly.
In the fifth, Darick Hall started the inning with a single and moved around to third after another single and sacrifice bunt. Quiroz drove in Hall for his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly.
The RailRiders plated two in the last of the fifth. A walk and error put two runners on to begin the inning before a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. A groundout scored Josh VanMeter and Luis Gonzalez then crossed the plate on a wild pitch to make it 6-3.
The 'Pigs answered back with two in the sixth. Stevenson walked and stole second to start the rally and then went to third on a flyout. Muzziotti drove him in with a single and then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Kody Clemens joined the fun with an RBI single, plating Muzziotti to make it 8-3.
David Dahl provided the cherry on top as he popped a solo homer to leftfield in the ninth, his third of the season, to bring the final score to 9-3.
Phillips (2-1) garnered his second straight win for the IronPigs by allowing just three runs (two earned) over six frames on four hits and three walks, striking out six.
Clayton Beeter (1-1) suffered the loss for the RailRiders as he conceded five runs in four innings on four hits and four walks, striking out five.
The IronPigs and RailRiders continue their series on Saturday, April 20 with first pitch slated for 4:05 p.m. Michaiel Mercado (0-0, 0.00) goes for Lehigh Valley while Scranton/Wilkes-Barre counters with Cody Poteet (0-0, 2.16)
