Iowa Cubs News Release
NASHVILLE, TN - Manager Marty Pevey led the Iowa Cubs (2-4) to a 6-3 victory over the Nashville Sounds (3-5) in 11.0 innings, Thursday at First Tennessee Park. The win marks No. 1,000 of Pevey's managerial career and the 356th in his Iowa Cubs career, making him the winningest manager in Iowa history.
It was a scoreless contest into the sixth as Iowa captured the first edge. The I-Cubs snapped a 23.2 scoreless inning slump in unusual fashion, drawing four-consecutive walks with two down to force in a run. David Bote followed with a two-RBI double to give Iowa the 3-0 lead.
Michael Roth dazzled, spinning 6.0 shutout frames and allowing just two hits and a pair of walks with three strikeouts. The bullpen couldn't preserve the shutout as Nashville capitalized on three walks from Randy Rosario to bring in a run in the eighth. The Sounds didn't quit and with a two-run home run from Anthony Garcia in the ninth, the game was forced to extras.
Iowa retook the lead in the 11th with another run forced in via walk. Stephen Bruno widened the gap with a two-RBI single, before Shae Simmons came on to close the door and take the save.
The I-Cubs collected just four hits - two from Bote and one from both Chris Gimenez and Bruno. The last time the I-Cubs won a game with four or fewer hits was July 25, 2017 when they collected three knocks in a 2-1 victory at El Paso.
Iowa begins a four-game series at Memphis tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. CT. Follow the action on AM 940, MiLB.TV or www.iowacubs.com.
