Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton penalty kill stifled the Providence Bruins in key moments of Friday night's game as the Penguins shutout their opponent 3-0 at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

The victory improved the Penguins to 9-0-0-0 on home ice this season, a franchise-record home winning streak.

Providence was unsuccessful in converting on four power play opportunities, including three times while Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was nursing a 2-0 lead and a late six-on-four man advantage.

"Obviously when you win the special teams battle, you're going to be in a position to win games," Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan said after the game. "I thought the P.K. was tremendous late, especially on the six-on-four... If they get a goal there, it's a hockey game."

The Penguins held Providence to just one shot on goal during the two-minute, six-on-four man power play that came after Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy opted to pull goaltender Malcolm Subban in favor of an extra attacker with 3:47 remaining in the game and his team trailing by three goals.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton mustered several empty net opportunities without scoring, perhaps the most notable being goaltender Matt Murray's chance to fire the puck down the ice with no attackers around him. Instead, Murray chose to pass the puck, content with his 29 saves for his third shutout of the season and 15th in his AHL career.

Conor Sheary opened the scoring when he ripped a wrist shot past Subban's blocker at 18:22 of the first period. The goal gave Sheary his team-leading 19th point of the season.

Scott Wilson found Kael Mouillierat on the Penguins' fourth power play opportunity of the game to make it 2-0 at 8:13 of the second. Mouillierat's goal was his sixth of the season, and ended a Wilkes-Barre/Scranton man advantage drought that lasted nine power plays.

The Bruins' best scoring chance came when Noel Acciari was set up for a wide-open, backdoor play in the waning moments of the second period, only to be robbed by the outstretched pad of Murray just before time expired.

"I tried to get my stick on the pass, but I didn't. From there it was just desperation," Murray said of the save on Acciari. "I put my leg to the post and got a piece of it, and it actually got through and was sitting there, so I had to kind of bat it out with my back leg. So it was a little closer than I would have liked."

Dominik Simon made it 3-0 when he picked up a carom of the boards and put the puck behind Subban with 4:13 remaining in the game.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (15-2-0-0) is back at it again Saturday night at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza, and they'll take on their Pennsylvania rival, the Hershey Bears. The Bears will be looking for revenge as they fell 7-0 to the Penguins in their only meeting this season back on Nov. 13. Puck drop between the Bears and Penguins is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
