Portland Pirates News Release

Portland, ME - Carter Bancks scored two goals and an assist and goalie Richard Bachman stopped 29 shots to lead the Utica Comets past the Portland Pirates by a score of 4-1 at the Cross Insurance Arena on Friday night.

Utica kicked off the scoring 7:21 into the first period when Carter Bancks capitalized on a Pirates turnover for his third goal of the season.

Defenseman Ashton Sautner grabbed the puck just inside of the blue line and threw the shot on net. Bancks was just below the hash marks when he deflected the Sautner shot past Portland goaltender Mike McKenna for the 1-0 lead.

Taylor Fedun added some insurance for the Comets with a power-play goal late in the third period. With less than 10 minutes left, Fedun smacked a one-time slap shot through traffic and past McKenna to make the score 2-0.

Both teams were looking for more combining for three goals in the matches' final two minutes.

Portland's Chase Balisy spoiled goaltender Richard Bachman's shutout bid with 1:10 remaining when he redirected a shot up-and-over the goaltender.

Bancks and Blair Jones would sandwich Portland's goal for the 4-1 final with empty net tallies.

The Pirates' record drops to 7-9-0-0 on the season while Utica improves to 8-8-1-1. Bachman improved to 2-2-0 with the 29 save win, while McKenna dropped to 6-6-0, making 15 saves.

Utica was 1-for-3 on the power play, while Portland was 0-for-3.

The two teams finish off the two-game series Saturday night in Portland. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7pm at the Cross Insurance Arena. Saturday night's game is the Pirates' Annual Teddy Bear Toss Game. Bring a new stuffed toy to the game and throw it on the ice when the Pirates score their first goal. All donations will go to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital.
