Syracuse Crunch News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Tye McGinn got the Syracuse Crunch on the board late in the third period, but the team was unable to overcome a three-goal deficit and were overwhelmed by the Toronto Marlies, 3-1, tonight at the War Memorial Arena.
The loss evens the eight-game season series, 1-1, and moves the Crunch to 8-6-2-1 on the season. The Marlies advance to 15-3-1-0.
Crunch goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis made 27 saves in defeat. Marlies netminder Ryan Massa earned the win as he stopped 16 shots in his AHL debut. Both teams tallied one power-play goal in tonight's contest with Syracuse going 1-for-3 and Toronto 1-for-4.
The Marlies came out fast and struck on the man-advantage just 6:24 into the first period. Josh Leivo blasted one from the right point off assists from T.J. Brennan and Mark Arcobello to take a 1-0 lead over the Crunch.
Toronto added two more during the second to build a three-goal lead. At the 4:40 mark, Sam Carrick fired a shot from the slot. The puck hit Gudlevskis, but managed to trickle across the goal line. Brennan earned his second assist of the night, while Matt Frattin nabbed a point for the secondary helper on the eventual game-winner.
Under three minutes later, the Marlies lit the lamp for the final time. Gudlevskis was pulled over to cut Andrew Campbell off on a sharp angle shot. The goaltender slid too far outside the crease and left the net unguarded for Frederik Gauthier to score on the rebound. Richard Clune earned a point on the play.
At the 4:11 mark of the third, the Crunch finally got one back. While on the power play, Anthony DeAngelo carried the puck down low and dropped it back for McGinn to redirect for his third of the season.
Syracuse was unable to initiate a comeback and fell to Toronto for the first time this season, 3-1.
The Crunch travel to Bridgeport to face the Sound Tigers on Sunday, Nov. 29 at 5 p.m.
