Facts About Donating Blood:
The Northeastern Pennsylvania Blood Services Region furnishes blood to most hospitals throughout northeastern and central Pennsylvania, and parts of three counties in New York. More than 400 blood donations are needed every day to keep a constant supply on hand.
To give blood, you must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be healthy.
We encourage people who have never given blood before to help by giving blood today.
Blood donors are needed no matter what their blood type. O-Negative blood is the universal blood type - anyone can receive it - and is used in emergency situations. There is always a need for O-Negative blood donors. But each blood donation is important - no matter what the type.
Blood is a perishable commodity. Red cells last only 42 days. Platelets last only 5 days. Frozen plasma can be stored for about a year. The blood supply needs to be constantly replenished.
