Abbotsford Heat News Release
The Iowa Stars got a goal from Francis Wathier halfway through the third period and held on for a 3-1 win over the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights on Friday at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. It was Iowa's second win in as many games against the Knights this week.
The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights used the powerplay to forge ahead. Carsen Germyn brought the puck down the right wing and dished in the slot to Andrei Taratukhin. He faked around a defender and threw a wrist shot past goalie Tobias Stephan for his sixth goal of the year.
The Stars tied the game with their own powerplay in the second period. Marty Wilford beat Curtis McElhinney with a wrist shot from the point to make it 1-1 after two.
Both teams came into the third period trying to find a chink in their opponent's armor. The Stars found it just past the halfway mark of the period. Wathier stepped down the left wing and unleashed a booming slap shot that slipped past McElhinney for his second goal of the year.
The Knights nearly tied it when Cam Cunning faked down Stephan but hit the post. Joel Lundqvist added an empty net goal for the 3-1 win.
The Knights are now 19-11-2-0. They have now gone seven games without winning back-to-back contests.
Three Stars: 1. Francis Wathier (IOW) - Game-winning; 2. Tobias Stephan (IOW) - 21 saves; 3. Tim Hambly (OMA)
The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights play their final home game of 2006 on Saturday when they host the Peoria Rivermen at 7:00 p.m. The Knights will celebrate Kids' New Years with an indoor fireworks show, the largest in Nebraska, immediately following the game.
