HAMILTON, ON - In front of a season-high 7,674 spectators at Copps Coliseum, the visiting Toronto Marlies hung on to defeat the Hamilton Bulldogs 3-2 on Friday night. With the loss, the Bulldogs record drops to 21-11-1-1.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring at the 10:01 mark of the first period when Andrei Kostitsyn converted Zack Stortini's pass from the left side of the net for a 1-0 lead. Eric Manlow also drew an assist on Kostitsyn's 11th tally of the season.
Toronto's Luke Fulghum tied the game 1-1 by beating Hamilton goaltender Jaroslav Halak on a breakaway 1:37 into the middle stanza. The goal was Fulghum's first of the season and was assisted by David Cloutier.
The Marlies took a 2-1 lead after Jeff Corey's wrist shot from the right face-off circle found the back of the net at the 10:25 mark of the third period.
Toronto increased its lead to 3-1, with Brett Engelhardt's redirection of Jaime Sifers' point shot at 15:48 of the final period. With 14 seconds remaining in the third period, the Bulldogs pulled within a goal with a power-play marker by Andre Benoit. Francis Lemieux and Kyle Chipchura drew helpers on Benoit's third goal of the season.
Jaroslav Halak made 27 saves on 30 shots while suffering the loss for the Bulldogs. At the other end of the ice, Todd Ford picked up his first win of the season for the Marlies, stopping 18 of the 20 shots he faced.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, December 30th at 7:00 p.m. when they travel to Grand Rapids to face the North Division Griffins.
