Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

NEED TO KNOW: Joc Pederson smashed a go-ahead grand slam to cap a five-run bottom of the eighth inning as the Albuquerque Isotopes (50-56) rallied to an 8-7 series-clinching victory against the Fresno Grizzlies (51-55) Thursday afternoon at Isotopes Park. The Topes won the series three games to one and finished the eight-game homestand with a 6-2 record. Albuquerque has also now won eight of its last 10 games.

HAD IT ALL THE WAY: After the Isotopes jumped out to 3-0 lead through three innings, the Grizzlies reclaimed the lead 7-3 behind a five-run fifth inning. The Topes offense fell silent until the bottom of the eighth. Jamie Romak led off the inning with a double and Mike Baxter reached on an error. A couple of quick outs seemed to doom the Isotopes, but back-to-back walks re-ignited Albuquerque and plated the first run of the inning before Joc Pederson stepped to the plate with the bases loaded. After watching a pair of pitches go by, Pederson blasted a 1-1 pitch over the right field wall, giving the Isotopes an 8-7 lead.

GRAND (SLAM) FINALE: Outfielder Joc Pederson became the first player in Isotopes history with a 20-20 season Wednesday night and topped that by hitting the Isotopes first grand slam of the this season with his go-ahead slam in the bottom of the eighth inning Thursday afternoon. Pederson now has 21 home runs and 25 stolen bases on the season. Since the All-Star Break, Pederson is batting .308 (8-for-26) with four home runs, 10 RBI and eight walks in eight games.

KEEPING IT CLOSE: Thursday afternoon's one-run decision was the ninth game out of 16 between the Isotopes and Grizzlies decided by two runs or fewer this season and fourth-straight one-run decision between the two clubs. Overall this season, Albuquerque is now 21-18 in one-run games and 9-10 in two-run affairs.

PICHERS DOING IT ALL: Red Patterson picked up an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning Thursday afternoon. It marked the third time in the last four days that an Albuquerque starting pitcher has recorded an RBI single. Monday night, Zach Lee stroked a two-out two-RBI single to center field, and on Wednesday night, Drew Carpenter poked an RBI-single to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning.

ON DECK: The Isotopes will travel to Reno for a four-game series against the Aces. Right-hander Carlos Frias (7-4, 4.71 ERA) will start the opener for Albuquerque, while Reno is scheduled to go with righty Bo Schultz (8-6, 5.30 ERA).

IN THE HOLE: After their four-game set against the Aces, Albuquerque will continue its eight-game road trip with a stop in Sacramento for four against the River Cats before returning home on Aug. 2 to face the Tacoma Rainiers.
