Fresno Grizzlies News Release

ALBUQUERQUE - Even though the Fresno Grizzlies (51-54) raced out to a 5-0 lead on Wednesday night at Isotopes Park, starter Jose De Paula exited early (injury) and the bullpen faltered on way to an 8-7 loss to the Albuquerque Isotopes (49-56). The game marked the third straight one-run contest between the two teams, although the Isotopes hold two of the three wins. The loss tonight also gives Fresno their ninth loss after leading in the month of July alone.

Things looked promising early when Travis Ishikawa towered a three-run homer (10) to right in the second inning. Chris Dominguez continued the second inning damage against Albuquerque by doubling and scoring on a single by Gary Brown (2-4, 3 RBI, R) to make it 4-0. Brown then stole second and scored when Dan Uggla, making his Fresno debut, singled through the hole at shortstop to push the lead to 5-0.

The good fortune of the top of the second quickly went away when the Isotopes responded in the bottom half with two runs. Back-to-back one-out singles by Mike Baxter and Trayvon Robinson turned into runs as Carlos Triunfel doubled down the left-field line. Starter Jose De Paula surrendered his third and final run when Joc Pederson smoked his 20th homer of the season to right field on a 2-1 pitch.

De Paula exited after the third inning due to injury, and the wheels went with him. Reliever Adam Reifer (L, 5-2; 5 ER/0.2 IP) tossed two wild pitches, hit a batter, walked one and allowed three hits on way to surrendering five runs in the fourth inning. The final three runs charged to Reifer came when reliever Jake Dunning inherited the bases loaded and gave up a bases-clearing double to Brock Peterson that split the gap in left-center. Armed with an 8-6 lead, the Isotopes never looked back.

Fresno made a late comeback attempt in the ninth when Gary Brown's sacrifice fly cut the lead to one and left the tying run on first with two outs. But, Darren Ford was thrown out attempting to steal second with pinch-hitter Nick Noonan at the plate to end the game.

The Grizzlies managed to keep things close despite reliever Andrew Carignan walking four straight batters in the sixth. A base running snafu by Albuquerque kept them off the board and Brett Bochy induced a pop out from Jamie Romak to escape the inning.

Fresno closes the 16-game season series with Albuquerque tomorrow morning at 11:05 a.m. PT at Isotopes Park. Left-hander Mike Kickham (7-5, 3.53) will receive his 21st start of the season and oppose right-hander Red Patterson (3-7, 5.40). The action can be heard on 1430 AM KYNO.
