Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Allentown, PA) William Cuevas gave the Pawtucket Red Sox six strong innings and was backed by a stout offense in a 7-1 win over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Sunday afternoon at Coca Cola Park. Cuevas earned his first Pawtucket win and pitched the PawSox to a series win. In the four-game series, the Sox plated 24 runs and ripped 41 hits.
For the third straight game, Pawtucket scored in the top of the first inning. Deven Marrero and Quintin Berry singled off of 'Pigs starter David Buchanan to open the game. When Carlos Rivero grounded into a double play, Marrero scored and the PawSox had a 1-0 lead.
Cuevas (1-2) worked around a hit in the first inning but gave up his only blemish in the second. Russ Canzler led off the frame with a line drive to center; Berry made a spectacular diving catch for the first out. With two outs, Cuevas hit Tommy Joseph with an 0-2 curveball. Jordan Danks then hit a drive to center field; Berry raced back and nearly missed a second breathtaking grab. When the ball clipped off of Berry's glove and fell on the warning track, Joseph scored to tie the game.
Buchanan (3-1) yielded a second run on Marco Hernandez's third AAA home run with two outs in the fourth. The blast was the Sox' fourth of the series and sixth on the road trip.
The PawSox scored one run in the sixth, and put the game away in the seventh against a former teammate. After Buchanan walked consecutive hitters to lead off the sixth, he retired Chris Marrero then yielded a double to Sandy Leon that made it a 3-1 game. Dalier Hinojosa came on from the bullpen and retired Hernandez and Jemile Weeks to limit the damage.
In the seventh, Jonathan Roof bounced an infield hit before Hinojosa walked Deven Marrero and Berry. Rivero then singled to right to score Roof. Craig ripped a line-drive single to left that scored a pair and made it a 6-1 game. Chris Marrero then bounced into a double play to score the final run of the game.
Robby Scott relieved Cuevas and pitched a scoreless three innings to earn his first AAA save.
