Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Rochester, N.Y. - Called by the game's No. 1 prospect by a number of pundits and publications, Byron Buxton's skills were on full display at Frontier Field on Sunday. The star outfielder homered to tie the game in the fifth and delivered the walk-off winner in the 12th as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) fell to Buxton's Rochester Red Wings (Minnesota Twins), 3-2. The RailRiders (69-54) lost for the 14th time in 19 games at Frontier Field while Rochester (63-60) sliced its divisional deficit to 6.0 games.
The RailRiders led 2-0 after single scores in the first two innings. Rob Refsnyder came home on a David Hurlbut wild pitch in the first while Kyle Roller's leadoff triple in the second was followed by an RBI groundout from Gregorio Petit.
The Red Wings got on the board with a run-scoring fielder's choice from Danny Ortiz in the fourth that plated James Beresford. An inning later, Buxton slammed a two-out solo homer to left for a 2-2 draw.
The stalemate lasted until the 12th when Jose Martinez welcomed reliever Andury Acevedo (0-2) to the game with a leadoff single. Carlos Paulino sacrificed him to second before Buxton delivered the walk-off single to center.
It made a winner out of Mark Hamburger (4-2) who tossed a scoreless inning.
After a scheduled day off on Monday, the RailRiders return to PNC Field for a six-game homestand on Tuesday, Aug. 18 as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Philadelphia Phillies) and Red Wings come to town. It starts with T-Shirt Tuesday presented by Norwegian Cruise Lines. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a Mr. IncrediBall T-shirt.
