Charlotte Knights News Release

(TOLEDO, OH) - RHP Luis Cessa allowed just one run over five innings, Dixon Machado and Steven Moya had three hits apiece, and the Toledo Mud Hens beat the Charlotte Knights by a score of 6-1 on Sunday in the finale of the three-game series from Fifth Third Field in Toledo, OH.

Cessa (1-1, 6.61) allowed just three hits over his five frames and struck-out three batters on the night. The Mexican right-hander earned his first win with the Mud Hens since being acquired at the trade deadline from the New York Mets as part of the Yoenis Cespedes deal. Cessa posted a 7-4 record with a 2.56 ERA in 13 starts with the Double-A Binghamton Mets earlier this season. He was an Eastern League Mid-Season All-Star back in July.

The 23-year-old Toledo starter was backed by his offense, which jumped out in front early on Sunday thanks to a two-run triple in the bottom of the first inning off the bat of Marc Krauss. One inning later, Machado came through with a two-run single, which put the 'Hens up by a score of 4-0.

In the top of the third inning, the Knights battled back and scored their first and only run of the game against Cessa and the Mud Hens. Charlotte outfielder Jason Coats doubled home Leury Garcia for his team-high 73rd RBI of the season. Coats had two of Charlotte's three hits on the day and finished the game 2-for-4 with the RBI.

The Mud Hens added to their 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning thanks to Machado and Moya. Machado started the inning off with a double and Moya followed with an RBI single to make it a 5-1 lead. Moya later scored in the fifth on a Josh Wilson ground out, which made it a 6-1 game.

Toledo scored all six of their runs off Charlotte starter Brad Penny (6-7, 4.16), who was saddled with the loss. In all, Penny allowed six runs (five earned) on 10 hits over five innings of work. Terance Marin tossed a scoreless sixth and seventh inning, while Miguel Chalas did not allow a run in his only inning of work (eighth inning).

The Knights will now hit the road and make the trek to Columbus, OH to open a quick two-game series against the Columbus Clippers at 7:05 p.m. from Huntington Park on Monday. RHP Scott Carroll (5-3, 3.38) will start for the Knights against Columbus RHP Toru Murata (12-4, 2.88). Pre-game radio coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 730 AM and www.charlotteknights.com. The "Voice of the Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action.
