Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: All the run scoring came in the seventh. Unfortunately for the RailRiders, their two-spot was answered with a three-run effort by the Red Wings in a 3-2 SWB loss at Frontier Field on Saturday night. The RailRiders' season-high-tying winning streak stalled at six while Rochester staved off a fall to .500.
A LITTLE HELP?: Starter Kyle Davies (8-7) suffered his team-worst seventh loss despite allowing just one earned run over 6.1 innings. He left after a missed-catch error and a subsequent throw on the infield put men at second and third with the RailRiders holding a 2-1 lead. Each of those men later scored with Branden Pinder on the hill. Davies, who had not lost since June 28 versus Buffalo, tossed his eighth quality start among his last 10. Over that time he has gone 3-2 with a 2.02 ERA, .205 batting average against and a 1.01 WHIP. While he leads the team in wins, his losses have come about in part thanks to poor run support. He receives just 3.6 runs/start and a total of 11 in his seven losses (1.6/loss). Only the since-promoted Luis Severino (9) has more minor league wins on the Yankees farm this year than Davies, who also boasts the system's ninth-best ERA at 3.41.
BEST SEASON EVER: At 69-53, the RailRiders have surpassed the efforts of the first two RailRiders teams. Both the 2013 and 2014 RailRiders went 68-76 and each unit finished in fifth place in the IL North.
LUCKY NO. 13: Aaron Judge snapped a string of 13 straight RailRiders retired by starter Michael Bowden with a two-out single in the seventh. It was the first of four consecutive hits. Judge leads the Yankees' farm in overall home runs (18) while the next three spots are all occupied by men with SWB time in 2015: 2. Gary Sanchez (16); 3. Kyle Roller (13); T-4. Greg Bird (12). Judge also paces the farm with 68 RBIs. Ten of his last 18 hits have gone for extra bases including five home runs. His five stolen bases in 40 Triple-A games trump the two he had in 194 pro games before his SWB stay.
SLADE'S BLADE: Judge scored in the seventh when the next batter, Slade Heathcott, thundered a double beyond the impressive range of Byron Buxton in center. It was part of a two-hit night for Heathcott who entered the game in a 4-for-41 (.098) slump with no RBIs, three walks (.159 OBP) and 17 strikeouts. Heathcott also delivered one of the RailRiders' best defensive gems of the season when he robbed Xavier Avery of a home run with a leaping catch at the left-field wall in the fifth inning. His efforts earned him a spot on ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays.
WHITE KNUCKLERS: Thirteen (52%) of the RailRiders' last 25 games have been decided by one run and 18 have come down to two runs or less. SWB has gone 18-7 (.720) over that longer span and owns the IL's best record in one-run games at 24-15 (.615).
BACK ON TRACK: After an 0-for-4 Friday snapped the longest active IL hitting streak at a dozen games, Ben Gamel went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk. He leads the IL with 12 outfield assists and co-paces all of MiLB with 14 triples, two shy of the single-season franchise record set by Shane Victorino in his 2005 IL MVP season. Gamel has multiple hits in 12 of 21, hitting .390/.452/.720/1.171 in that time. He entered today with the IL's fourth-best batting average (.301). He also ranks among the IL's best in hits (T-2nd, 128), slugging (3rd, .478), extra-base hits (T-4th, 43), runs scored (T-2nd, 68) and total bases (3rd, 203).
OFF THE RAILS: The game-winning run came on a balk against Pinder that plated Avery in the seventh...It was the RailRiders' sixth balk of the season and the third of Pinder's career...Two of them have come this season including one in the bigs on April 18 at Tampa Bay...Pinder's blown save dropped him to 1-for-5 in save tries while the team has blown 19 (33%) of its 58 save opportunities...Kyle Roller walked on an 0-for-2 night with a pair of strikeouts...He has gone 5-for-56 (.089) since the All-Star break with eight walks (.235 OBP), 24 strikeouts and four RBIs...He has gone hitless in 20 straight at-bats with 13 strikeouts.
