Palma Joins RiverDogs in Midst of Playoff Push
June 7, 2016 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release
ROME, GA - The New York Yankees have announced that OF Alexander Palma has been called up to Class A Charleston from extended spring training, taking the vacated spot of OF Jeff Hendrix who was placed on the 7-day disabled list.
Palma appeared in 81 games with the RiverDogs last season after receiving a call up in May, and would finish out the year in Charleston batting .202/.248/.256 with one home run and 26 RBIs. Palma's lone home run of the 2015 season was a memorable one, as he slugged a grand slam in a RiverDogs 12-9 comeback win over Greenville on June 28.
Originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent in July of 2012, the 20-year-old native of Miranda, Venezuela appeared in 37 games for the DSL Yankees 2 in 2013 where he batted .287 with two homers and 16 RBI in 37 games, before earning a promotion to the Gulf Coast League the following year.
In 2014, the six foot, 200 pound right-handed bat ranked seventh among all Yankees minor leaguers with a .305 batting average while slugging four home runs and 13 doubles with 45 RBI in 52 games at the rookie ball level. Palma was named a GCL Postseason All-Star after leading the league in RBI while ranking second in hits (65) and total bases (96).
The first-place RiverDogs (32-22) continue a three-game road series with Rome Braves on Tuesday night at 7pm, before returning to Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park for a seven-game homestand against the Asheville Tourists and Augusta GreenJackets. The RiverDogs hold a five game lead in the division over both Augusta and Greenville with 14 games left to play in the first-half.
Ticket information for the RiverDogs' homestand can be secured by contacting the box office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647) or online at www.riverdogs.com. Those that can't make it to the park can follow every pitch of the RiverDogs season on WTMA 1250 AM and streaming online at riverdogs.com.
