Columbia Fireflies News Release
COLUMBIA, SC - The Fireflies fell behind early and dropped the middle game of the three-game series to the Suns, 6-2, at Spirit Communications Park. Ivan Wilson shined at the plate and clubbed his third double in just two days.
The runs came early and often for Hagerstown (35-19). Ian Sagdal plated the game's first run in the second and the Suns added two more in the third. Chase Ingram (L, 3-5) walked the leadoff batter, Victor Robles, who then stole second base. Two hitters later, Kelvin Gutierrez singled and scored the runner. It was the first of three straight base hits, the last of which off Jakson Reetz's stick scored Gutierrez.
The visitors extended their lead to 6-0 with three more scores in the fourth. Seth Davis later came on in relief during the frame and proceeded to heave 3.2 scoreless innings of work. His outing tied the longest for a Fireflies reliever this season. The lefty struck out seven batters - that, in fact, is the most by a relief pitcher in 2016.
Columbia (28-27) was flummoxed by Suns starter Pedro Avila (W, 4-3) but began to rally in the bottom of the seventh. J.C. Rodriguez and David Thompson drilled back-to-back base hits off of Taylor Guilbeau and stood at second and third. Pat Mazeika grounded out to the shortstop Edwin Lora but Rodriguez scored from third in the process. Two batters later, Milton Ramos socked a base hit through the left side of the infield and to score Thompson.
Craig Missigman followed Davis' lead on the mound and extended his scoreless inning streak. The right-hander hasn't allowed a run in 14.2 innings - that's the longest such streak of the season.
The Fireflies try again to hand the Suns a loss on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Lefty P.J. Conlon (7-1, 1.42) toes the rubber against right-hander Jefry Rodriguez (5-2, 2.86).
You can watch the action on MiLB.TV starting at 7:00 p.m. or listen in on WGCV 620 AM, 105.1 and 96.3 FM, ColumbiaFireflies.com and the TuneIn Radio app starting at 6:45 p.m.
