Mundell, Rodgers Highlight Tourists All-Star Selections
June 7, 2016 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Asheville Tourists News Release
ASHEVILLE, NC - Early this morning the South Atlantic League announced the rosters for the 57th Annual SAL All-Star Game scheduled to be played on June 21, 2016, at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in Lexington, Kentucky, home of the Lexington Legends. Four members of the Asheville Tourists have been voted in, all as starters for the Southern division, by team's managers and coaching staffs, local media and front office executives.
Brian Mundell will start at first base for the Southern division squad. Mundell currently leads the South Atlantic League in batting average (.351), hits (79), extra-base hits (35), runs scored (46), total bases (121), and doubles (31). No Minor League player has hit more than 55 doubles in a season since 1956; a mark that Mundell is on pace to shatter this season. The Valencia, California native was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the seventh round in 2015 and was named an All-Star in the Northwest League last year.
Brendan Rodgers has been named the starting short-stop for the Southern division. Rodgers ranks fifth in the league in Home Runs (8) and fifth in runs batted in (34). The Longwood, Florida native is batting .282 on the season and has recorded five RBI in a game on two separate occasions this year. The first round draft pick out of Lake Mary High School is making his first appearance in a Minor League All-Star game.
The Tourists also put two starters in the Southern division outfield. Yonathan Daza will start in right field and Sam Hilliard will start in left field. Daza currently ranks sixth in the SAL with a .322 batting average, third in hits with 68, and second in doubles with 21. He ranks third in the league with six outfield assists. Hilliard is batting .286 with five Home Runs and 33 runs batted in. His four triples pace the Tourists and his .352 batting average in the month of May was among the best in the South Atlantic League.
Tourists pitchers Peter Lambert, Jack Wynkoop, and Sam Thoele were all left off the final ballot. Lambert currently sports ninth lowest ERA in the league at 2.29; Wynkoop ranks third in wins with six; and Thoele is tied for the league lead in saves with 11. Asheville finishes the first half against Columbia with a four-game series at McCormick Field that runs from June 16-19. The Tourists begin the second half of the season on June 23 with a Thirsty Thursday home contest against West Virginia. Tickets are available at the ServPro Box Office or by calling the front office at (828)258-0428.
