Drive Take Two from Intimidators on Tuesday
June 7, 2016 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Kannapolis, NC - Behind the powerful bat of Kyri Washington plus terrific pitching, the Greenville Drive swept both games of Tuesday's doubleheader with the Kannapolis Intimidators, taking the opener 4-1 and the nightcap 5-2.
The Drive (30-27) never trailed in the first game of the day, taking a 1-0 lead on the benefit of an Intimidators (22-36) error in the top of the first.
In the fourth, Josh Ockimey doubled to begin the frame and moved to third on Tate Matheny's single to set the stage for Washington, who belted a Luis Martinez (1-5) offering over the wall in left-center for a three-run homer.
Roniel Raudes (6-1) was brilliant for the Drive in the opener, allowing just one run over five and one-third innings with five strikeouts. He left the game after back-to-back doubles in the sixth by Cody Daily and Seby Zavala, but Adam Lau came in and recorded the final five outs to earn his first save.
Kannapolis took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in game two when Danny Mendick laced an RBI single off Austin Glorius, who made his first start of the season.
The Drive answered with two runs in the second against Brannon Easterling. Luis Alexander Basabe led off with a single, and he later scored on Chad De La Guerra's sacrifice fly. Luis Alejandro Basabe then laced a double to put Greenville up 2-1.
Another RBI hit by Mendick tied the game at two in the third, but Washington delivered his second three-run homer of the night in the fifth to score Alejandro Basabe and Ockimey, who each singled, to put the Drive ahead for good.
Marc Brakeman (3-4) hurled three scoreless innings in his first relief appearance of the year to get the win for Greenville. Anyelo Leclerc recorded his fourth save by throwing a scoreless seventh inning.
Washington drove in six runs on three hits in the doubleheader. Luis Alejandro Basabe, Luis Alexander Basabe and Mitchell Gunsolus each collected two hits in the nightcap.
The Drive will send right-hander Jose Almonte (1-1, 2.14) to the mound on Wednesday night as they go for the sweep of the three-game series. Intimidators right-hander Chris Comito (0-5, 6.91) will deliver the first pitch at 7:05 PM.
