Providence Bruins News Release

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins, member of the American Hockey League, announced today that defenseman Kenny Smith has been signed to a Professional Tryout Agreement from the ECHL's Charlotte Checkers. With the move, the P-Bruins now have 25 players on their roster, including 12 forwards, 10 defensemen and three goaltenders.

Smith, 25, is in his fourth professional season with his sixth different club. The defenseman, who participated in the P-Bruins' training camp prior to the start of the season, began the year in Charlotte before a two-game call-up to Providence earlier this month, going scoreless during that time. Smith returned to the Checkers for five games before this morning's recall. Overall, Smith has four points, including three assists, and 38 penalty minutes in 21 contests for Charlotte. A season ago, the blue-liner split time between Charlotte, the Hartford Wolf Pack and Providence, playing one game for the P-Bruins in January. During his young career, during which he has amassed five goals, 29 assists, 34 points and 251 PIM in 219 contests, Smith has also seen time in the AHL with the Portland Pirates and Edmonton Roadrunners and in the ECHL with the Greenville Grrrowl. Prior to turning pro, the native of Stoneham, Massachusetts, played four years for the Harvard University Crimson, captaining the team as a senior. Smith was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers 84th overall in the third round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Providence, the top team in the AHL with a record of 23-4-2 and 48 points, plays a pair of games this week, both against the Lowell Devils. The home-and-home series begins tonight at the Dunkin' Donuts Center for David Krejci Bobblehead Night at 7:05 p.m. The bobbleheads are courtesy of WEEI, NBC 10, 2nd Time Around Sports and Getty Petrolium. Tomorrow, the P-Bruins return to the Tsongas Arena to face the Devils at 7:05 p.m., the team's last game before Christmas.
