PROVIDENCE, RI - A four-goal second period by the Providence Bruins, including two shorthanded by Martins Karsums, sent the Lowell Devils to their eighth game without a victory, 6-1, on Friday at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
With score 1-1 at 5:09 of the second period and Providence on the penalty kill, Karsuns picked up his first of the evening when he snuck the puck out of a scrum in Lowell's zone and poked it over the stick of goalie Jordan Parise.
The Bruins went up 3-1 under three minutes later off a fortuitous bounce for David Krecji. A centering pass to T.J. Trevelyan at the far post hit off the back of the net and directly to an open Krecji on the near side. Nathan Saunders made it a three-goal lead at 13:44 of the second on his first goal of the season, a point shot past a screened Parise.
Karsuns' completed the onslaught in the middle frame on a turnover by the Devils' power play. Nate Thompson knocked down an outlet pass and had two chances denied by Parise before Karsuns' swept low at 15:56 and threw in his second shorthanded goal of the game. Matt Hendricks completed the scoring for Providence at 11:50 of the third period.
The Devils took a 1-0 lead at 11:31 of the first, while picking up their first shorthanded goal of the season. Killing off a Bruins' 5-on-3 advantage, Lowell got a man back when Ivan Khomutov hopped out of the box and quickly started a 2-on-1 rush with Ryan Murphy. Though Khomutov's pass to Murphy was blocked, a trailing Rosario Ruggeri gathered the puck and fired it past Tuukka Rask.
T.J. Trevelyan ensured that Providence would head into the first intermission tied at one when his wrist shot from top of the circles dipped under the blocker of Parise at 16:08.
The Devils complete their home-and-home series against the Providence Bruins at Tsongas Arena on Saturday, December 22 at 7:05 p.ma. One lucky fan will have a chance to win $25,000 during the game. When the Sharks come back into town on Thursday, December 27 at 7:05 p.m., the Devils will be giving away a complimentary limousine ride and tickets to a Boston Bruins home game to one lucky fan.
