Peoria Rivermen News Release
Mike Glumac scored twice and Marek Schwarz won his first start in nearly three weeks as the Peoria Rivermen downed the Lake Erie Monsters in the inaugural game between the two teams 6-2 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Lake Erie got on the board first with a power play goal from Johnny Boychuk at 4:35, firing a wrist shot over the left shoulder of Schwarz with a crowd in front of the Rivermen net.
Peoria evened the contest when Ryan Glenn skated the puck down the left wing from the point, wrapping a shot around from behind the net that deflected off a Monsters defender and past Mike Wall at 8:55.
The Rivermen would stretch its lead in the second period, starting with a Trent Whitfield marker from Micki DuPont and Jean-Guy Trudel at 1:49, a five-on-three power play goal to make it 2-1.
Boychuk's second power play goal of the night tied the game at 7:14, but the Rivermen would come back with a late pair for a 4-2 edge at intermission.
Chris Porter put home a rebound at the side of the Monsters net past a sprawling Wall at 17:24, followed by Glumac's pretty backhand deflection of a goalmouth feed from Julian Talbot with just 42 seconds remaining in the period.
Peoria added two more goals in the third period. Charles Linglet extended his scoring streak to eight games by tipping home a Josh Soares feed at 7:00 of the final frame, and Glumac's second of the contest came as an unassisted shorthanded marker with just 1:04 remaining to ice the win.
Marek Schwarz stopped a total of 28 shots for the win, while Mike Wall turned aside 31-of-37 in the loss for the Monsters. Lake Erie finished the contest 2-for-6 on the power play and Peoria went 1-for-4.
The same two teams do battle tomorrow night at 6:30 pm CST, with the Rivermen Pre-Game Show with Tom Callahan kicking off one half-hour before puck drop on your Home for Rivermen Hockey, 96.5 ESPN Radio.
