Rivermen run down Monsters

The Lake Erie Monsters found themselves on the wrong side of a victory as the Peoria Rivermen came to town and collected a 6-2 win on Friday at Quicken Loans Arena.

The Monsters came out of the gates fast as they wound up on a power play at the 4:35 mark of the first. Johnny Boychuk got a good look in the slot and launched a wrister that had Peoria netminder Marek Schwarz on his haunches. Boychuk's tally was assisted by forwards Dan DaSilva and Brent Kelly.

"I just got the puck on a pass from Dan DaSilva and Wyatt Smith was in front of the net. The goaltender couldn't see the puck, I hit the net and it went in," said Boychuk.

Peoria wasted little time getting on the board as Ryan Glenn scored on a wraparound on the left side of the net at the 8:56 mark of the first period. His marker tied the game up at 1-1.

To begin the second, Peoria made the best of a power play as center Trent Whitfield posted his ninth goal of the season at the 1:49 mark.

With thoughts of tying the game up, Boychuk made Schwarz pay for being out of position as he received a cross-ice pass from defenseman Wes O'Neill. Boychuk launched a one-timer from the top of the left circle to notch the game at two. His goal marks his first multi-goal game of the season and his second power play marker of the night. O'Neill's assists is his first as a Monster.

"We had Johnny on offense tonight. He played right wing because we're short on bodies with David Jones and Cody McLeod being called up. He's played right wing before, but he had both of his goals playing the point on the power play. Johnny had a big game tonight, but we need more of that from everyone," said Monsters head coach Joe Sacco.

Just more than 10 minutes later, Peoria took the lead on a Chris Porter tally at the 17:24 mark and never looked back.

Peoria then went on to score three more unanswered goals to end the contest, 6-2.

The Rivermen's barrage began with a goal by right wing Mike Glumac, his seventh of the season.

The second goal came via the stick of left wing Charles Linglet. The assist on the goal was credited to rookie forward Josh Soares, who was playing in only his second game in a Peoria sweater.

The finish off the scoring run, Glumac added another of his own, a short-handed marker with less than two minutes on the clock.

Despite the loss, the Monsters went 2-6 on the power play and posted their highest shots-on-goal total since December 8, against Rockford.

Lake Erie goaltender Mike Wall stopped 31 of 37 shots in his third straight start in net, while his counterpart Schwarz turned away 28 of 30.

The Monsters return to action tomorrow night as they face-off against this same Peoria squad at 7:30 p.m. at The Q.
