Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins are partnering with the Wal-Mart Foundation and the RI State Alliance of YMCA's to raise awareness and help support the RI State Alliance of YMCA's. The Wal-Mart Foundation has donated $25,000 to the RI State Alliance of YMCA's, one of nine local organizations that received grants from the Wal-Mart Foundation in 2008.
The Providence Bruins and the Wal-Mart Foundation have invited the RI State Alliance of YMCA's out to the P-Bruins game on Friday, February 20 to further raise awareness of their efforts in the Providence community. The Wal-Mart Foundation will be making an on-ice check presentation of the $25,000 grant to the RI State Alliance of YMCA's prior to the game and fans will be able to visit YMCA representatives on the concourse throughout the game night to learn more about the organizations efforts.
The RI State Alliance of YMCAs serves over 91,000 members and gives back nearly $2.5 million in support to the community. The YMCAs are connected through a reciprocal agreement allowing members to take advantage of programs and activities offered at any facility in the participating network. Â
The YMCA is an integral part of the community throughout Rhode Island and surrounding areas. With over 16 branches nearby, there is something for everyone at the YMCA including health & wellness activities, fitness centers, after school programs, child care, camp, and much more. The YMCA provides financial assistance to community members who otherwise might not be able to participate in these activities and offers a host of free programs to those who qualify like cancer survivors and military families.
"The Providence Bruins are proud to partner with Wal-Mart to support the RI State Alliance of YMCA's" said Jeff Hagan, Chief Operating Officer of the Providence Bruins. "We look forward to hosting the RI State Alliance of YMCA's on February 20 to further raise awareness and generate support for their efforts."
"The YMCA has such a positive effect on so many kids across the country," said Christopher N. Buchanan, Senior Manager of Public Affairs, Wal-Mart. "Wal-Mart recognizes their noble effort and is pleased to support the branches of their organization that directly impact our local communities."
This is one of nine new Wal-Mart Foundation grants totaling $225,000 to non-profits organizations in Rhode Island supporting a wide range of community and social services programs that benefit children, adults, and working families throughout the state including heating assistance, quality healthcare, after school activities, environmental initiatives, and adult literacy.  These new foundation grants are in addition to Wal-Mart's established statewide charitable giving initiatives. In 2007, Wal-Mart Stores and Sam's Club gave a total of $674,057 in cash and in-kind donations to local causes and organizations in the communities they serve in the state of Rhode Island. Through additional funds raised through stores and Clubs throughout the state, Wal-Mart contributed and raised a grand total of $1,162,690 as a result of its presence in Rhode Island.
